Domain Transfer

The transfer has to be initiated by the gaining registrar and can be requested with the API TransferDomain command.
A valid Authorization Code must be provided to initiate a transfer successfully. You may obtain the authorization code from the losing registrar.
As soon as a domain transfer has been initiated it can either be approved ("ACK") by Registrar or denied ("NACK") by Registrar. If the registry receives neither a denial ("NACK") nor an approval ("ACK") the transfer will be ACKed after 1 day.

If the Registrant is an individual, the owner contact and the administrative contact must coincide!

Only individual and juridical persons residing in or belonging to a EU Member State can register domain names under the ccTLD "it". Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Esthonia, Finland, France, Germany, United Kingdom, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden. For customers of any other country, we offer a Trustee Service.

If the registrant is an individual, the .IT PIN has to be

  • The registrant's fiscal code (for Italian citizens consisting of exactly 16 characters and numbers) or
  • the number of an identity document (for citizens resident in other EU states, where there is no equivalent individual fiscal code).

If the registrant is an organization, the .IT PIN has to be

  • The company's fiscal code (for Italian companies consisting of exactly 11 digits) or
  • The company's VAT number
Please remark that the domain registration fee is non-refundable. That means that if the domain registration cannot be finished (e.g. in case of permanently failed DNS checks) the domain will be deleted after 30 days without any refunds.

Domain registration confirmation

Since summer of 2013 and after the latest roll-out of the NIC.IT guidelines (http://www.nic.it/create-and-change.it/regulations-and-guidelines), the IT registry requires the registrar to send out a confirmation email to the registrant, in order to inform him about the domain registration. This obligation is part of the EU Ecommerce Guideline of 2000 resp. 2005 and as each IT registrar is obliged to send out these emails.

Please find below an e-Mail template for individuals as well as for organizations:
For individual

Trustee Service

Depending on the TLD, the Trustee Service will be added to the existing contacts, or replaces one or more of the WHOIS contacts. Once replaced the Trustee acts on behalf of the registrant and thereby makes a registration of that specific TLD possible. It can be activated using the following parameter:

X-IT-ACCEPT-TRUSTEE-TAC = 1 ''enable our trustee service''

In order to mitigate legal risk of our Trustee, we validate all .IT domain registration requests which utilize our .IT Trustee Service. Registration of .IT domains using our Trustee Service will stay in "requested" status until validated by the Trustee lawyer. Please note that Validation can take up to 24 hours during a business day and up to 72 hours over weekends.

Nameserver Checks

PLEASE NOTE: The registry performs nameserver checks, therefore, domains are not activated until the domain's nameservers are successfully checked by the registry.

Nameservers for a .IT domain have to be correctly configured before the registration request succeeds, otherwise registration will fail.
Please check that the following requirements are met:

  • there must be at least 2 (two) authoritative nameservers for the domain name, and they must correspond exactly to those found in the registration of the domain name
  • the IP addresses of hosts in the registration of the domain name must correspond to those actually associated with them in the DNS
  • the domain name cannot be associated with a CNAME record
  • the name of the nameserver specified in the SOA record for the domain name cannot be a CNAME
  • the names of the authoritative nameservers for the domain name cannot be CNAMEs
  • if there is an MX registration it cannot be associated with a CNAME
  • all hosts in the registration must be authoritative for the domain name registered

    Transfer

There is a different transfer procedure depending, if the domain name is currently registered with a REGISTRAR (EPP system) or with a MAINTAINER (older registration system). To see if a domain is currently registered with a REGISTRAR or with a MAINTAINER simply have a look at the whois:

    Transfers from a REGISTRAR

The transfer has to be initiated by the gaining registrar and can be requested with the API TransferDomain command.
A valid Authorization Code must be provided to initiate a transfer successfully. You may obtain the authorization code from the losing registrar.
As soon as a domain transfer has been initiated it can either be approved ("ACK") by Registrar or denied ("NACK") by Registrar. If the registry receives neither a denial ("NACK") nor an approval ("ACK") the transfer will be ACKed after 1 day.

    Transfers from a MAINTAINER

Transfers have to be initiated via our system and by sending a fax form to NIC.it. Depending on the type of registrant different forms have to be sent.

    Natural Persons:

    • Request the transfer through the API , by entering the PIN/VAT number/taxpayer's code in the authcode field.
    • Get the LAR here.
    • The first field has to contain the domain name you're trying to register. Fill in the numbered Fields as follows:

    • Then, please wait till the whois changes to
    mnt-by: 1API-REG

    Renewal Process

Domains cannot be renewed explicitly. To renew a domain you have to set the domain renewal mode or default renewal mode to AUTORENEW. Within the AUTORENEW process the registration period will be extended by 1 year.

  • The following overview shows you all available Domain Addons which can be used for this special kind of TLD. It also shows the respective API parameters which are required to activate the Domain Addons:

Addon Class Parameter to (de)activate *1) Renewal term *2) Affected Parameters *3)
    Trustee X-IT-ACCEPT-TRUSTEE-TAC = 0 | 1 1 month OWNERCONTACT,ADMINCONTACT
    Trustee X-IT-ACCEPT-TRUSTEE-TAC = 0 | 1 1 month OWNERCONTACT,ADMINCONTACT
    Trustee X-IT-ACCEPT-TRUSTEE-TAC = 0 | 1 1 month OWNERCONTACT,ADMINCONTACT
    Trustee X-IT-ACCEPT-TRUSTEE-TAC = 0 | 2 1 month OWNERCONTACT,ADMINCONTACT
    Trustee X-IT-ACCEPT-TRUSTEE-TAC = 0 | 2 1 month OWNERCONTACT,ADMINCONTACT
    Trustee X-IT-ACCEPT-TRUSTEE-TAC = 0 | 3 1 month OWNERCONTACT,ADMINCONTACT
    Trustee X-IT-ACCEPT-TRUSTEE-TAC = 0 | 3 1 month OWNERCONTACT,ADMINCONTACT

*1) Parameter to (de)activate: When accessing our backend through the API, you can either activate the addon with X-IT-ACCEPT-TRUSTEE-TAC=1 or deactivate it with
          X-IT-ACCEPT-TRUSTEE-TAC=0
*2) Renewal Term: Is the minimum renewal term of the "Addon Class"
*3) If you are using a "Trustee" Domain Addon normally the original owner contact or the original admin contact or both are replaced by a contact provided by the trustee provider.

    Restore Process

To restore a domain as a RegistrarOC customer, you simply have to execute the RestoreDomain command. HEXONET directly forwards the restore request to the registry, which performs the restore in real-time. As soon as the restore is complete, the domain will get assigned to your account with the original domain data.

Please do not initiate a restore directly at the registry (e.g. using the registrar webinterface). All restore operations must be performed through our system.
